The Qatar 2022 campaign
Senegal lost their opener to the Netherlands, then won consecutive matches against Qatar and Ecuador to finish second in Group A. The Ecuador victory was the decisive qualification result. England ended the campaign in the round of 16, but the group recovery remains the central feature: Senegal progressed by responding to an opening defeat with two wins.
Reading the record
Senegal recorded 2 wins, 0 draws and 2 defeats across 4 matches, scoring 5 goals and conceding 7. FIFA’s match summaries record 14 attempts on target from 51 total attempts during their campaign.
Shoot-outs decide which team advances, but their kicks are excluded from the goal totals above. Matches decided on penalties count as draws in this win–draw–loss record; extra-time goals count towards the match score.
Matches to revisit
The Ecuador match is the qualification hinge; England provides the test that ended the run.
