The Qatar 2022 campaign
France beat Australia and Denmark to secure progression, then topped Group D despite losing to Tunisia. Victories over Poland, England and Morocco brought them back to the final. Mbappé's hat-trick rescued the match twice against Argentina, but France lost the shoot-out after a 3–3 draw. His eight-goal Golden Boot and the team's runners-up finish are separate parts of the same campaign.
Reading the record
France recorded 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat across 7 matches, scoring 16 goals and conceding 8. FIFA’s match summaries record 35 attempts on target from 101 total attempts during their campaign.
Shoot-outs decide which team advances, but their kicks are excluded from the goal totals above. Matches decided on penalties count as draws in this win–draw–loss record; extra-time goals count towards the match score.
Matches to revisit
Denmark and Poland show Mbappé's scoring before the final; England and Morocco show how France progressed without a goal from him.
